Welcome to OEX California!

OEX has been providing scuba and kayaking services in San Diego for over a decade now. We feature the best in classes, rentals, sales and tours.

History of OEX:

The Beginning, OEX La Jolla: OEX Dive & Kayak Centers opened its doors in sunny La Jolla, CA in 1995. John and Brent, co-founders of OEX and buddies since junior high school, figured opening a scuba and kayak shop was a great way to avoid getting real jobs. They were right! Friends have been made, kids have been had, and good times have followed over many years of sharing the best scuba diving and kayaking that the Pacific Ocean has to offer. OEX La Jolla is home to La Jolla’s Ecological Reserve, a great area for scuba diving and recreational kayaking. Just a big playground for ocean-going enthusiasts!

Step two, OEX Mission Bay: In 2005, OEX expanded to Mission Bay and helped support a scuba dive charter boat, Divebliss, at its adjacent dock in Quivira Basin, Mission Bay. Divebliss has since been replaced by the Humboldt, run by Waterhorse Charters and is truly the nicest day charter dive boat you’ll find within driving distance of San Diego.

Point Loma To Mission Bay: The Exodus: OEX Mission Bay actually began in Point Loma.  Our store on Rosecrans focused primarily on kayak fishing, and later, freediving.  When the opportunity arose to take over this beautiful location, right on the water in Mission Bay, we had to jump on it.  We continue to specialize in kayak fishing and freediving, but our Mission Bay location has allowed us to expand into stand up paddleboarding, outrigger canoe and now we are able offer on the water demo’s right here at the shop.

Ramblin’ up north, OEX Sunset Beach: Due to the success of OEX taking over the Malibu Kayak Factory store in Point Loma, the busy Malibu Kayaks Shop in Sunset Beach, California turned over its keys to OEX in the spring of 2007. OEX was fortunate enough to have one of the premier kayak fishermen in San Diego, Andy “Iceman” Allen, move up north and run the show. A great location on PCH next to the harbor and a great staff make this a go-to spot for both recreational kayaking and kayak fishing.

Another kayak fishing home, OEX Kearny Mesa: In 2008, OEX was fortunate enough to merge with San Diego Kayak Adventures of Kearny Mesa and its head, Rik Osanai. OEX Kearny Mesa, as it’s now called, carries many accessories and Wilderness Systems, Ocean Kayak, and Malibu Kayaks.

OEX travels to North County, San Diego, OEX Oceanside: In the fall of 2007, OEX and local kayak fishing stud and general mischief-maker, Nate Clookie secured the rights to carry and sell Hobie Kayaks in North County, San Diego. Hobie Kayaks have the Mirage Drive, or pedal system, an increasingly popular system for both kayak fishing and recreational kayaking. A year later, in the fall of 2008, Plastic Navy founder and another mischief-maker, Drew Clark came to OEX Oceanside and greatly expanded its offerings to include a full-service Padi Scuba Dive Center and introduced Malibu Kayaks, Ocean Kayaks, and Wilderness Systems along with its staple, Hobie Kayaks.
