Stand Up Paddle board (SUP)
SUP! Stand Up Paddle Boarding is quickly becoming a favorite activity in San Diego. Stand up paddleboards are basically long and buoyant surfboards that you use a single blade paddle to propel forward.
There are two ways that people are using stand up paddleboards in San Diego. One is for surfing; the other is for calm Mission Bay-like waters.
In La Jolla, there is surf, some days more than others. On the days when the wave action is calm, entering and exiting the water for a beginner on a SUP is quite doable. For the days when the Sea Gods are angry, it would take a more experienced SUP’er to successfully get through the surf zone. Also important in La Jolla when on a stand up paddleboard is to understand surf etiquette and to respect those that are surfing traditional methods. These are big boards and take some practice to control.
For those starting out, it may make sense to begin your SUP career in the calmer bay waters until you get a feel for them. The learning curve is quick so a good day on Mission Bay will go a long way. We offer tours and lessons at both our OEX La Jolla and OEX Mission Bay locations.
